Concept 2 | Layers

"We’ve all seen those walls on busy city streets -- the ones covered in layers of ads, bills, and graffiti. Have you ever wondered how deep they go? If you were pull back each layer of paper and paint, you may see the wall in a new light, until it’s not just a wall anymore. It’s an activist, an artist, a politician, a movement, a musician, a festival. It’s overlapping stories, all different but connected.

Very simply, we’re playing with the metaphor of peeling back the layers of an onion, to get closer and closer to the core.
For example:
• Layers reveal more of the story the more layers we pull back.
• Each layer illustrates a different perspective and together they paint a whole picture.

Concept 01 | Lens

"We love the idea of using different lenses -- not only to ‘focus’ the viewer’s attention but also to show how one story has many perspectives depending on how you look at it. The view through one lens may be drastically different than from another.
Imagine you’re looking through a peephole in a door. It’s hard to get a really clear picture of what you’re looking at. But if that door had hundreds of peepholes, you could look through any number of them to build a bigger, more complete picture.
This visual metaphor has a strong tie to the art of filmmaking, and also to the Independent Lens brand collateral.
For example:
• We’ll use circles throughout to draw focus.
• We’ll experiment with a variety of lenses, suggesting multiple perspectives of the same story.
• We’ll play with different magnifications and angles."

Concept 03 | Connections

"Like the hyper-detailed bulletinboard walls in an active investigation office, we’ll dance through the clues, highlighting previously unsuspected links and revealing their roles in the greater story.
The idea is to give a glimpse into the thought process behind connecting the dots of an incomplete story. Seemingly unrelated items are untangled bit by bit to reveal a bigger picture that is much more complex than originally expected."
